IFCS: The Internet Film Critic Society Membership Requirements

IFCS Membership Requirements

Film reviews, critiques, essays or analyses must be 300 words or longer and demonstrate an exceptional mastery of grammar and the English language. If your reviews contain frequent grammatical errors or typos, you will not be accepted.

A minimum of 50 film reviews should be available online and published by an accredited publication and must include your name or byline. If your reviews are NOT available online, you may submit them to an accredited online publication (there are hundreds out there, so do a search) to meet membership requirements. Your reviews must be indexed or searchable when an IFCS accountant verifies your content. Reviews posted as blogs, actual blogs, forums and large public article publishing outlets (including www.MySpace.com, www.helium.com and www.facebook.com) that do not specifically focus on or have a section dedicated to film reviews are not applicable.

Upon acceptance into the IFCS, you will be categorized as either:
1. ACTIVE MEMBER. An active member is defined as a member who writes regular film criticism for online publications, published with a minimum frequency of once a month, and 50 reviews per year, and who can vote in the group’s yearly awards.
2. INACTIVE MEMBER. Inactive members cannot vote in the awards. If an active member loses valid affiliation on or before January 1st of any calendar year, he or she will be considered inactive. If an active member loses valid affiliation as defined January 1st, he or she remains an active member (with voting privileges) until January 1st of the following year, at which point he or she becomes an inactive member. Active membership shall be reactivated as soon as a member again satisfies the criteria.

Critics Per Publication Limit: No publication can be represented in the IFCS by more than three active members, unless those members also represent one or more other publications that are not currently represented by three critics.

Acceptance into the IFCS shall be determined by a vote of all available active members, provided applicant clearly meets the membership requirements. Failure to provide all required information may result in disqualification.

IFCS is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. There are currently no dues collected for membership.

Applications will only be accepted January 1st - August 1st of each year so that a precise roster can be created. If you feel you meet the requirements for membership, and would like to be reviewed for acceptance, please send the following information to ifcsapplication@hotmail.com:

1. Your full name, a contact email address and city/state/country where you are based.
2. List of media outlets you currently contribute to, including position/title with each organization.
3. Links to the websites of any/all companies you currently write for.
4. (Optional) A 125 px X 125 px JPEG picture of yourself. (Please no caricatures, cartoons, copyrighted images etc.)
5. (Optional) A short bio of your involvement in the film/film critic community.
6. The title of your favorite film.
